Which Cuisine to Choose? That Is The Question! 29-07-2010

A question I have recently been asked is ‘if I had to choose one country’s cuisine to stick to for the rest of my life, which one would it be?’ this may seem a slightly random question but trust me ask a friend and you’ll be surprised as to the length a conversation on this topic can be stretched.

So my two favourites would have to be Thai and Italian food, but picking just one would be impossible, and how could I live without the British ritual of a Sunday roast! Never! And this is the very serious dilemma that most people face.

And now, thanks to a recent trip to Cyprus I have one more type of cuisine to add to the list, Meze. For those of you that have never had a meze meal I suggest you get yourself down to your nearest Cypriot/Greek restaurant and ask the waiter to bring a selection of his favourite dishes and you’ll be hooked.

You would have thought that the amount of meze that I consumed during my stay in Cyprus would have put me off for a while, but surprisingly this is not the case and I can only assume this is due to the vast variety that this cuisine has to offer, fish, seafood, meat, vegetarian, hot, cold, spicy and the list goes on, every time we sat down for a meal endless dishes would be placed on our table with each dish being more delicious than the next, and every restaurant has a different take on each dish, which provides a great deal of discussion as to which dish is the favourite and from which restaurant! Hours of fun!

Now for anyone reading this if you are visiting Cyprus this year I have two helpful foodie tips, one, you must try the various different ways the Cypriots cook their Halloumi cheese, and two a trip inland to Myloi restaurant is a must, not only for the stunning views you get from eating on a balcony seven floors up, but the locally caught trout is some of the best fish I have ever tasted.

So I am still no nearer on deciding which country’s cuisine to choose from, and luckily it is not a decision that needs to made, and as the English weather is looking up for this summer a long leisurely meze meal on a Sunday is looking like the perfect replacement for the winter roasts!
